Aging uncleared items before they harden
How to age outstanding deposits and cheques so a reconciliation review does not start from a blank page.
Uncleared items are ordinary. Uncleared items without dates or owners are what slow a bank reconciliation review.
Start with a simple age band
Use bands that match your policy — often 0–30, 31–60, and over 60 days from the statement date that first showed the item. Write the originating date on every line, not only the amount.
Separate timing from doubt
An in-transit deposit that clears next working day belongs in timing. A cheque outstanding for four months belongs in doubt until someone confirms it remains valid. Reviewers will ask different questions of each.
Prepare the pack
Before you request a review, export the open-item list with age, counterparty, and last follow-up note. That single sheet often saves a full day of fieldwork.
