Timing differences on Hong Kong multi-currency accounts

Weekend FX updates, T+ settlement, and why HKD and USD lines disagree even when both are correct.

Multi-currency ledgers in Hong Kong often look “wrong” on a Friday close even when the bank and the books are both telling the truth.

Rate source mismatch

If the ledger revalues at a noon fixing and the bank posts at end-of-day, the HKD equivalent moves without a cash movement. Note the rate source in the reconciliation so auditors do not treat the gap as an unlocated difference.

Settlement calendars

USD wires initiated late on a Hong Kong business day may clear on the US banking calendar. Mark expected clearance dates; do not force a same-day match.

What we write in the memo

During a bank reconciliation review, we classify these as timing when evidence supports the lag, and escalate only when amounts lack a remittance trail.
